The first days with a hospital bed at home go much more smoothly when the room, the power, and the linens are ready before the truck arrives, and when everyone knows the daily safety routine. This checklist pulls together our home setup guide and hospital bed safety guide into one list you can print, tick off, and keep by the bed.
How to use this checklist
Work through the first five sections (measuring, the spot, power, linens, and delivery day) before and during delivery. Keep the rest by the bed: the rail, mattress, and lifting sections are for the weeks that follow, and the daily check takes a minute each morning. You can tick the boxes on screen, but nothing is saved, so print the PDF if you want to keep track.
This is general information, not medical advice. The person’s doctor, nurse, or therapist knows their situation, and the bed maker’s manual comes first for that bed.
The checklist
Measure the room and doorways Before the bed is ordered
Example: a 36 × 88 in. bed with 30 in. on both sides and 24 in. at the foot needs about 96 × 112 in. (8 ft × 9 ft 4 in.) of floor space.
Choose the spot Before delivery
Power and outlets Before delivery
Linens Before delivery
Delivery day Before the delivery team leaves
Rails and entrapment safety Before first use, then regularly

Why these steps matter
- Measuring first avoids a failed delivery. Most home beds come in sections, but the largest piece still has to get through the narrowest doorway or turn. Our room and doorway fit checker does the math, and hospital bed dimensions lists common sizes.
- Entrapment is a real risk. The FDA received 901 reports of people caught, trapped, entangled, or strangled in hospital beds from 1985 to 2013, including 531 deaths, mostly frail, elderly, or confused patients (FDA). Matching parts and checking gaps is the main defense. See hospital bed safety for the seven entrapment zones.
- Pressure injuries can start in someone who stays in bed. Regular position changes, daily skin checks, and smooth, dry sheets are the everyday basics (MedlinePlus). Choosing a surface? See hospital bed mattresses.
- Caregiver backs matter too. Using the bed’s height, a draw sheet, and a second person protects both of you (MedlinePlus).
- Falls out of bed need a plan. Ask the care team about a low bed, a bedside fall mat, and whether hospital bed rails are right for the person.
- Sheets are the easiest thing to get wrong. Our hospital bed sheet size guide explains widths and pocket depths.
If you need local help, such as respite care or an equipment loan program, the Eldercare Locator (1-800-677-1116) can point you to services near you. Still arranging the bed? Compare hospital bed rental with free and low-cost options.

How we made this checklist
We condensed our existing setup and safety guides and checked each item against FDA bed and bed rail guidance, MedlinePlus caregiving instructions from the U.S. National Library of Medicine, and the U.S. Access Board’s ADA Standards, on October 8, 2026. Room and bed measurements are the typical figures explained on our sizes page. The printable PDF uses the same checklist wording as this page.
