SonderCare sells full-electric home hospital beds with a modern residential look (aluminum and dark woodgrain, concealed casters, and vertically nesting rails) directly to families in the U.S. and Canada. It’s a well-known name among people looking for a hospital bed that doesn’t look like one. This guide covers every SonderCare bed, who each suits, what the published numbers say, and the fine print. We haven’t tested SonderCare beds, and SonderCare doesn’t sell through the retailer we link to, so there are no SonderCare buying links on this page. Everything here comes from SonderCare’s own website, checked October 9, 2026.

Which SonderCare bed suits whom

The Aura suits people who need real hospital-bed positioning in a modern look, the Companion suits couples, and the Impulse Essential suits a lower budget when a hospital bed isn’t needed.

Aura Premium and Platinum: a hospital bed that looks modern

The Aura is SonderCare’s core bed. It has separate backrest and knee motors, powered height from a 10-inch low to a 32-inch high, a Trendelenburg tilt that SonderCare uses for its chair and “zero gravity” positions, and an automatic contour seat. Concealed wheel-casters lock with a central brake pedal, the hand control lights up, and the assist rails adjust to three heights. SonderCare says its beds are designed and made in Germany to ISO, FDA, and international hospital-bed standards; powered hospital beds are FDA-regulated medical devices (21 CFR 880.5100).

It suits someone who needs real hospital-bed positioning, a caregiver who wants a high working height, and a family that wants something closer to modern furniture than wood paneling. The Platinum is the same bed upholstered in stain- and fluid-resistant Crypton fabric. The 48-inch versions add room to turn over.

Aura Companion: for couples

The Companion is two 39-inch Aura beds under one upholstered headboard. Each side has its own head and knee controls; height moves both sides together, or the beds can be split apart and run independently. It’s rated 700 lb and measures 85 × 84 inches outside, so measure the room carefully. See hospital beds for couples.

Impulse Essential: the lower-cost option

The Impulse gives head, knee, and height adjustment for $3,999, but SonderCare is clear that it lacks “the advanced comfort and safety functions of a certified hospital bed.” Its 15-inch low height is 5 inches higher than the Aura’s, it sits on four column legs without casters, the limit is 400 lb, and SonderCare says it isn’t available in Canada.

Delivery, warranty, returns, and insurance

Delivery costs $449 to $1,499 depending on speed and setup, the warranty is 5 years on parts, returns are allowed up to 7 days after delivery with fees, and SonderCare doesn’t work with Medicare or Medicaid.

  • Delivery: drop-ship to the driveway with no installation is $449 (10–21 business days). White-glove delivery and setup is $599 standard (10–21 days), $999 expedited (4–9 days), or $1,499 rush (1–3 days to most locations). The Companion costs $300 to $500 more. Warehouse pickup is free. SonderCare says it has more than 120 regional and local warehouses, with central warehouses in St. Louis and London, Ontario.
  • Warranty: a 5-year comprehensive parts warranty. Labor coverage is an extra-cost add-on.
  • Returns: up to 7 days after delivery. A 4% fee to cancel before delivery, a 10% restocking fee for an unused return in the original packaging, and 25% once unpackaged.
  • Insurance: SonderCare doesn’t work with Medicare or Medicaid; Medicare generally treats powered height as a convenience feature (LCD L33820). SonderCare says some private insurers cover its beds fully or partly, and it offers payment plans.
  • Rentals: in some areas. SonderCare listed an Aura Premium rental in the St. Louis area at $399 a month, with a two-month minimum.
  • Try before you buy: SonderCare offers virtual demos and has some showrooms.

Alternatives, and when each one fits better

If you want the same clinical positioning for less, with wood finishes: the Med-Mizer SelectCare has a 10 to 25 in. height, Trendelenburg, widths to 42 inches, an 84-inch length option, and a 600 lb rating, at $5,887 on Med-Mizer’s store. See our Med-Mizer guide.

If getting out of bed is the hardest part: the Med-Mizer ActiveCare turns into a chair and uses its height to help the person stand. The Aura has a chair position but doesn’t rotate. See rotating beds for the elderly.

If the person weighs more than 500 lb: the Aura isn’t rated for it. Drive’s lightweight bariatric beds go to 600, 750, or 1,000 lb by width. See our bariatric bed guide and Drive guide.

If Medicare is paying: a basic semi-electric bed from a Medicare-enrolled supplier, such as Drive’s Delta Ultra-Light semi-electric, is the type Medicare covers for people who qualify. See semi-electric vs full-electric.
